Green city
Lugano is famous for its natural heritage. As much as 50% of Lugano's territory is made up of gardens and parks. Wooded areas account for 16.4 km². There are as many as 68 flowerbeds in the city, situated in 9 parks and 34 gardens. In spring, up to 103,000 flowers bloom, followed during the summer by another 66,000.
The lake is both the main element of our natural heritage and an essential, constituent part of Lugano's citizens' historical and social identity. This precious resource was one of the contributory factors behind Lugano’s expansion, previously as a source of livelihood and now as a mecca for tourists. It makes a significant contribution to the city's economy.
Taking great care of this natural heritage is a priority for Lugano due to its importance both as an economic and as an aesthetic resource. It is an essential goal for the city to make sure that both tourists and service providers act responsibly and to ensure that all concerned are aware of the delicate balance between man and nature.
