Lugano is characterised by the cohabitation of various cultures. The City currently counts 57'494 residents 21'802 of which are foreigners of 141 nationalities. The majority are Italian immigrants. It is therefore possible to talk about a cosmopolitan City on the one hand because of its foreign relations, on the other because of its population. Today Ticinese students are called to understand diversity within schools by facing their classmates' costumes and religions.
It is well known that education is the starting-point which will give shape to the future society. However, even adults are asked to understand the new social reality of their community given by the increasing mobility of populations on a world-wide scale. It is consequently essential to avoid all prejudices, which are often the cause of new hostilities, in order to create a society based on mutual respect and dialogue.
This is the reason why the Lugano Town Council has instituted the Integration and social information department. The Department is seen as a mean to make citizens aware of the problems related to integration. The Department must face tough issue which cannot be dealt with by finding standard solutions and this is due to the complexity of the phenomenon of migration.
