The casino was started over 100 years ago in order to improve Lugano's tourism. The casino presently has restrictions on the amount of money which can be gambled, but the casino is presently trying to have these restrictions lifted, in order to further generate interest in Lugano as a tourist destination. The government is also taking this into serious consideration as a means to finance other tourism initiatives without taking money from the tax payer. The government is concerned however about the problem of excessive gambling in the community which would consequently disable public founds.
