Summer Islands: Young people’s ideas to improve the usability of urban spaces
A project born from the ideas of high school students to create shaded, welcoming, and sustainable urban spaces has taken shape with a temporary installation in Piazzale Ex-Scuole.
14 August 2025
As part of the Urban Culture Workshops, promoted by the Youth Mediation programme of the Department of Education, Culture and Sport of the Canton of Ticino (DECS), in collaboration with the International Institute of Architecture (i2a), students from the Lugano 1 and Lugano 3 High Schools, supported by specialists, analysed the use of public spaces and the transition areas between streets and buildings. From this work emerged proposals for temporary installations, the “Summer Islands”, conceived by the students to engage the community, promote inclusive practices for climate adaptation, and improve the usability of urban spaces in summer, in line with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda.
The students from Lugano 3 High School emphasised the importance of shaded and welcoming spaces that encourage social interaction and provide climate comfort during hot months. The City took up their ideas, adapting them to practical possibilities, as some proposals could not be fully implemented due to technical and logistical reasons. Municipal services identified alternative solutions that preserved the original spirit, reinterpreting the students’ ideas in a concrete and functional way.
The installation on display
From August until 20 October 2025, a temporary installation can be visited in Piazzale Ex-Scuole, occupying two areas free from the market. It features seating groups made from wooden pallets, plants from the municipal nursery, shade sails, and a wooden chip surface (provided by the Aziende industriali di Lugano – AIL) to reduce asphalt heat. The project is supported by the Consorzio Valle del Cassarate e golfo di Lugano (CVC).
The space offers a resting and socialising area and enhances the market zone, making it more attractive for residents, visitors, and market operators.
A project with strong social value
The initiative, low-cost but with high educational and environmental value, combines sustainability, youth participation, and urban renewal. The installation will remain in the square until 20 October 2025.
