SBB Station: inauguration of the new Besso pedestrian underpass

The Department of Territory (DT), Swiss Federal Railways Ltd (SBB Ltd), the City of Lugano and the Regional Transport Commission of the Lugano Area (CRTL) invite the entire population to the inauguration of the new Besso pedestrian underpass on Thursday, 11 December 2025, starting at 10:30 a.m. Access is from Via P. Regazzoni, as described in the attached invitation.

Taking part in the inauguration ceremony will be the President of the Council of State and Director in charge of the Construction Division Norman Gobbi, the President of the Grand Council Fabio Schnellmann, the Regional Director SBB Southern Region Roberta Cattaneo, and the Mayor of Lugano Michele Foletti.

After the official part, a “social soup” will be offered to those present, prepared by the Grott Mobil Group and by the staff of the Francesco Foundation (Bethlehem Social Centre), founded and directed by Brother Martino Dotta, which promotes projects and services in favour of the most vulnerable groups.

The new Besso pedestrian underpass, whose construction began in 2021 and will be completed at the end of the month of November, will officially enter into service on 14 December 2025, on the occasion of the timetable change.

Throughout the entire day of 11 December, and until 8:00 p.m., interested residents will have the opportunity to preview the entire infrastructure. On this occasion, managers from the Construction Division, project managers from SBB Infrastructure and the designers involved in the construction of the underpass will be on site to illustrate details of the project.

The new Besso pedestrian underpass, with a total cost of CHF 60 million, was financed by the Confederation within the framework of the Agglomeration Programmes, by the Canton, by the municipalities of the CRTL, by the City of Lugano and by SBB, insofar as the underpass serves both as a city pedestrian link and as an access route to the station platforms.
