The naming ceremony for the street dedicated to Latvian poets and patriots Rainis and Aspazija, open to the public, will take place on Wednesday 7 May at 5:30 p.m. at Palazzo Tosetti Riva (Piazza Carlo Cattaneo 1) in Castagnola.
At about 7:10 p.m., the unveiling of the street name‑plate dedicated to Rainis and Aspazija (formerly Via Salute) will follow.
The event will be attended by Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Latvia Agnese Lāce, accompanied by Ambassador Guna Japiņa, and, representing the City Council of Lugano, Deputy Mayor Roberto Badaracco and City Councillor Raoul Ghisletta. The ceremony is part of a year of significant celebrations: the 120° anniversary of the Latvian Revolution of 1905, the couple’s arrival in Switzerland in exile (first in Zurich and later in Lugano), and the 160° anniversary of the birth of both poets — Rainis on 11 September 1865 and Aspazija on 16 March 1865.
