The Department of Territory (DT), Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), the City of Lugano and the Municipality of Massagno announce that, as part of the project known as StazLu1 – which foresees the re-organisation of traffic in the area of the Lugano SBB station – the start of cantonal works on the Genzana underpass (Lot 2) is scheduled for 2 June 2025.

To minimise inconvenience for all road users, facilitate the works and guarantee maximum safety for the workforce, uphill one-way traffic will be introduced on Via San Gottardo along the cantonal road between the Tunnel di Besso and the Arizona junction. Access to the station’s north forecourt will be allowed only for neighbouring residents and home-delivery services, while public-transport stops will be served as usual. This arrangement will remain in force from 2 June 2025 until June 2026.

Drivers coming from the A2 motorway (Lugano Nord exit) and heading to Lugano Centro or Molino Nuovo are advised to use the Galleria Vedeggio-Cassarate. Those travelling from Massagno towards Lugano Centro or Molino Nuovo should prefer the alternative route via Tesserete (through the Arizona junction) and via Torricelli. If the destination is Loreto or Paradiso, the recommended route is via Besso.

Users arriving from the Ospedale Civico area and bound for Loreto or Paradiso are invited to follow via Torricelli, via Trevano and then climb via Zurigo.

For traffic coming respectively from Breganzona and Bioggio (Via Crespera), no changes are planned; nevertheless, accessing the city centre along via Besso is recommended.

Please pay attention to the posted signage, and thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Access to the station’s north forecourt will always be guaranteed, except for five full-weekend closures that will be announced in advance and coordinated with public-transport companies and all parties involved. Traffic on the west side of the station (Città Alta side) will not be affected.

The works currently under way (Lot 1, mainly on railway premises, and Lot 2 on Via San Gottardo) are preliminary and preparatory for the main works, scheduled to start at the end of 2025 / beginning of 2026.

Lot 2 involves rebuilding the super- and sub-structure along Via San Gottardo, infrastructure works at the future eastern side ramp and on Via San Gottardo itself, road adjustments and widenings, and construction of a temporary access / exit ramp to the SBB terrace.

The Lugano SBB station hub is fundamental for future mobility management in the Luganese. The Genzana underpass will improve the road network, bus services and non-motorised traffic, taking another step towards the StazLu1 objectives of adapting infrastructure to new needs and improving mobility in the region.

Among the aims of the new axis – together with other planned works – is shifting part of the traffic from the eastern (front) to the western side of the SBB station, providing a transit route that continues south via the planned Galleria del Tassino. The project also links up the other construction sites on the west side (Comparto Besso and the Lugano tram-train network), offering an additional route compared with the Tunnel di Besso and, already in its first phase, a functional connection to the new bus interchange hub.
