On vacation I stay at home: many good reasons to spend summer in Lugano
When summer comes, we plan our vacations to more or less exotic destinations, where we seek the sea, sun, mountains, fun and, when we are tired, calm. But what if all this were right here, in Lugano, below our homes?
Three events not to be missed
If we have to choose three events that celebrate the beauty of summer more than others, among them is undoubtedly Lugano Marittima and its aperitifs at the mouth of the river. You can go there after work or after a nice swim in the lake (or at the lido). On the other hand, a good reason to stay downtown are the matches of the European soccer championship(UEFA Euro 2024) screened in Piazza Manzoni until July 14 (with free access). But summer in Lugano is above all the days of the Longlake Festival, July 11-28, when the squares, parks and streets become the setting for concerts and shows for everyone.
Until Aug. 25, those who want to have an aperitif or a bite to eat with the cool breeze of the lake cannot miss Lugano Marittima. The little village of bars along the left bank of the mouth of the Cassarate River is the ideal place to experience, close to home, the atmosphere of warm evenings by the sea.
What could be better than the passion-filled atmosphere of the matches for the Europeans? Until the final, on July 14, in Manzoni Square you can watch all the matches live and for free on a big screen.
If there is a time to be in Lugano and only in Lugano, it is the Longlake festival, between July 11 and 28. Concerts, performances, open-air readings-between the estuary, Ciani Park and city squares-celebrate the beauty of summer with 300 invited artists.
Three major festivals within the festival is the historic Estival Jazz, between July 11 and 14, which this year for some concerts will leave Piazza della Riforma and go to Ciani Park. But also Blues to Bop, which officially becomes part of the festival by anticipating between July 18 and 21 the concerts traditionally scheduled for late August. The most joyful of the festival festivals is Lugano Buskers. Between July 24 and 28, it brings street artists, performers, cabaret artists and puppeteers all over the city with shows suitable for children as well.
But there are plenty of events outside the main festivals that mark this 14th Longlake festival: check out the general program and come downtown!
I mercatini del LongLake Festival
On Saturday, July 13 and July 20, on the lakefront and at Ciani Park, there will be Lugano Bazaar at the Lake, the second-hand market where you can find clothes, jewelry, accessories and handicrafts. While every Thursday and Friday of the Festival, the lakefront will host the Summer Market with local products, clothes, gifts.
Lungo lago libero!
Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., the lakefront will be closed to traffic.
Relaxing moments at Ciani Park
Take part in summer activities at Ciani Park and experience moments of pure relaxation and cultural enrichment! From Park & Read's outdoor library to Midi Time's lunchtime reflections, each experience is unique. Don't miss the grove meetings for laughs and stimulating dialogues, and be enchanted by the music of Sunday concerts with The Nineteenth Century in Matinee.
Fully experiencing summer also means relaxing and taking time out. That's why, throughout the warm season, there is an outdoor library at the Ciani Park dock equipped with lounge chairs as well: it's the Park & Read.
On the other hand, those who want to gather insights and reflections during their lunch break, still in an intimate atmosphere, can go as far as Punta Foce, where from Monday to Friday, between 12 and 1 p.m., they will find Midi Time. Organized between July 12 and 26 as part of the Longlake Festival, Midi Time is a series of meetings. Check out the program.
A series of 4 meetings (Talks) - on July 19, 21, 22 and 23 - held in the shade of the majestic trees of Ciani Park always as part of the Longlake festival. There will be no shortage of laughter or reflection. To find out the program go to the Longlake Festival website.
What could be more chic than good music on Sunday mornings in the park? From June through September (except for festival weeks), concerts are scheduled every Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. at Ciani Grove. Check out the program The Nineteenth Century in Matinee.
